A series of activities to support Yangon Region Government (YRG) in tackling urban water and logistics challenges of Yangon have been done within nine months after the launch of Urban Water Logistics for a Greater Yangon program (UWLY).
On 23rd of July, the UWLY consortium has come together again to host a high-level workshops at Yangon Region Government office which aims to discuss and obtain solid next steps and pragmatic solutions for the water challenges of Yangon region.
We were honoured by the opening speech of H.E U Phyo Min Thein, Chief Minister of Yangon Region Government following by that of the H.E Mr Huub Buise, Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kingdoms of the Netherlands, Myanmar. Yangon Chief Minister clearly pressed the water challenges Yangon have been facing and the opportunities which Yangon holds and appreciated the efforts and collaborations which the UWLY bring for the region. Chief Minister noted that in Yangon, during the monsoon season, there is a serious issue of flooding due to the poor drainage condition and it is important to manage water resources, drainage and wastewater systematically and efficiently to mitigate flooding and water supply issues – including ground water extraction. It is believed that the outcome of this workshop will support to establish the water policy for Yangon.
Deputy Ambassador remarked on the opportunity to help Yangon Region Government with solving water challenges as PIB program and appreciated YRG for co-hosting the workshop.
Before the workshop began, Mr Frodo van Oostveen from The Water Agency, co-ordinator of the PIB program briefed about the program itself and the activities that are done so far since the program launched and he pressed that this program intends to bring the actionable and pragmatic solutions for Yangon region's water challenges.

Workshop Integrated Urban Water Policy Yangon in which stakeholders from Myanmar Port Authority (MPA), Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems (DWIR), Inland Water Transport (IWT), Department of Marine Administration (DMA), Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) and Parliament Members (PM), Myanmar Engineering Council (MEC) and Myanmar Maritime University (MMU) interactively participated.
