WE are Water Education (Indonesia) Batch 2 strengthens climate-resilient water management capacity in East Java

Building on the successful first Tailor-Made Training in 2024, the second batch of the WE are Water Education (Indonesia) program was officially launched on 4 July 2025. The program is jointly developed by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and The Water Agency, in collaboration with the East Java Provincial Government, under the Orange Knowledge Programme supported by Nuffic and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The training focuses on strengthening practical knowledge and professional skills for civil servants working on climate-resilient water management in the Welang River Basin, one of East Java’s important water systems facing increasing climate-related pressures.

This second batch brings together more than 70 participants from across the East Java Public Works and Water Resources Department (PUSDA). The group includes representatives from watershed planning, irrigation, river and reservoir management, coastal divisions, construction, and public relations. Participants also join from other relevant agencies, including the East Java Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Forestry Department.

The diverse professional backgrounds of the participants, including water resource managers, planners, field operators, IT specialists, and legal analysts, create a strong foundation for cross-sector learning and integrated water governance.

From July to August 2025, participants will complete four online learning modules focused on practical and policy-relevant themes: early warning systems, disaster risk reduction, the economics of ecosystem services, and stakeholder engagement in river basin management. The courses are delivered through the Asia Water Academy platform and feature lectures from both Indonesian and international experts, supporting knowledge exchange across different contexts and professional experiences.

Through Batch 2, the WE are Water Education (Indonesia) program continues to strengthen local institutional capacity while supporting practical learning, professional exchange, and long-term collaboration in climate-resilient water management across East Java.
