Launching Mekong Salt Lab Phase II in Partnership with Tra Vinh University

On October 18, 2023, The Water Agency launched Phase II of the Mekong Salt Lab project in collaboration with Tra Vinh University and esteemed partners. Mekong Salt Lab Phase II aims to foster collaborations among experts, farmers, and local authorities focusing on disseminating information, advanced forecasting, effective groundwater management, and efficient energy utilization. The initiative strives for resilience against salinity challenges and promotes sustainable water practices.

Key dignitaries, including Le Thanh Binh from the Provincial Party Standing Committee, officials from provincial and district departments, and Dutch experts, notably Mr. Daniel Coenraad Stork, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ho Chi Minh City, and Mr. Gregor Van Essen, the Project Director of The Water Agency attended the launch.

During the event, Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoa, the Principal of Tra Vinh University, emphasized the project’s link to the previous Mekong Salt Lab Phase 1 initiative and the importance of Project Phase II in managing regional salinity and promoting sustainable water practices. Vice Chairman Le Thanh Binh recognized the serious challenges in the Tra Vinh region caused by saltwater intrusion and acknowledged the project’s aim to empower local communities in tackling these issues.

Highlighting the project’s significance in the environmental and agricultural sectors, Mr. Daniel Coenraad Stork underscored the pivotal role it plays in supporting sustainable agriculture and water management. Emphasizing the mission of the Mekong Salt Lab, Mr. Gregor Van Essen, the Managing Director of The Water Agency, conveyed his aspirations to uplift the well-being of Mekong Delta farmers, all the while contributing to the development of a more resilient and sustainable agricultural ecosystem in the region.

This initiative will deliver practical tools and data, thereby empowering farmers to make informed decisions regarding their farm management. Furthermore, it will provide comprehensive training and equip them with the requisite expertise to effectively address the challenges arising from salinity.
