Water is everyone’s business!

Day zero is coming without us knowing it. Day Zero examines the perfect storm of climate change and population growth, challenging our ideas about water and spurring us towards crucial action. Issues on water are happening around the globe affecting the communities. Water issues are a stress experienced by companies too, such as water-related disaster such as flood and drought, water scarcity, and water pollution. However, at the same time, only a few companies have the knowledge to understand the impacts on their daily operations.

Asia Valuing Water for Business is an education program on water designed specifically for companies in Asia. Indonesia Valuing Water program is part of Asia Valuing Water initiative by The Water Agency to support mid-level professionals from all business sectors to help them make better decisions to face water risks.

On 17 May 2023, The Water Agency in collaboration with Euro Cham Indonesia, organized a workshop of Valuing Water for Business in Jakarta, Indonesia. Gregor van Essen, as a managing director of The Water Agency, introduced the challenge and opportunities of water in Indonesia. The workshop brings private sector leaders from HSBC, Colliers, Unilever, ABB, Diageo, Royal Haskoning DHV, and other Euro Cham members with the aim to raise their awareness of the value of water for businesses and help them develop their business case for water in Indonesia. Private sector leaders were encouraged to develop initiatives on water issues in their companies.

Nuni Sutyoko from HSBC Indonesia delivered her thoughts that in the board room, net zero is still considered as the main priority. However, people forget that water issue taken for granted without considering how to put that issue into the net zero agenda. Therefore, it is important to create an urgency on water also to make people part of the water initiatives. By valuing water, companies have an informed decision-making process.
