Building Expertise in East Java for Climate-Resilient Water Management

Following the official launch of the WE are Water Education (Indonesia) Program, various courses were designed considering inputs from the Public Works of Water Resource Agency of East Java Province (PUSDA EJP) and feedback from participating civil servants from related agencies, addressing the needed expertise and knowledge gaps in climate-resilient water management for the Welang River Basin.

Coordinated by The Water Agency, the courses were crafted by local and international experts from renowned universities and organizations, including Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Deltares, International Water Centre, Brawijaya University, Gadjah Mada University, SNV Indonesia, Rekonvasi Bhumi, Mataram University, and the University of Indonesia. The goal is to enhance the capacity of local agencies to manage complex water-related issues, especially in the context of climate change, while promoting inter-agency collaboration. The courses are organized into four clusters, each focusing on theoretical knowledge and practical case studies from Indonesia and worldwide. Check out the courses on the Asia Water Academy website here.

Launch of Training Clusters

The training clusters and courses were officially launched to the participants on April 30, 2024, through a hybrid workshop led by The Water Agency, together with VU Amsterdam, PUSDA EJP, and the participants. Mr. Syauqi Asyraf Faiz guided the 40 participants from The Water Agency for a smooth learning experience on the platform. The participants ‘ progress was monitored throughout the learning period (May-June 2024), and support was provided as needed. The participants’ knowledge was assessed through assignments and quizzes, ensuring a high standard of learning.

Thoughts and Insights from Course Providers and Participants

Leveraging the expertise and training acquired, a series of offline workshops will be held in the last week of June 2024, bringing together the participating civil servants, authorities, and international experts to develop collaborative solutions for river basin management in East Java Province, Indonesia.
